About George Syrmalis
I am a Nuclear Medicine physician, MD and PhD qualified, who transitioned from clinical science and Academia to entrepreneurship and ultimately into venture capital. In my own way, I help the daring build legendary companies.
I believe in funding life-science startups that truly aim to change the world by creating the medicines of the future. Having founded and led multiple biotech enterprises, I have learned that radical innovation lives at the edge of boundaries. Creativity, to me, is the art of bringing ideas to life; simplicity, the discipline of stripping away complexity to achieve convergent outcomes from divergent inputs.
Over time, I have also learned that strategies, while important, are not enough. My failures and victories alike have led me to value theories over strategies. A strategy may provide a roadmap to a temporary advantage, but once the destination is reached, it becomes obsolete. A sound theory, however, explains why value is created—it offers cause-and-effect insight and inspires new strategies that endure beyond circumstance.
I live and work in between Sydney Australia, Europe, and the USA—in great cities and amazing countries. My professional passion centres on building companies that translate scientific discovery into economic and societal value. I serve as Chairman and Group CEO of Bioscience Equity Partners, an investment bank and venture capital platform operating globally, dedicated to advancing early-stage life-science enterprises.
Outside the boardroom, I’m the father of four daughters—an enterprise in itself—and I enjoy cooking, gardening, jazz, fast cars, and sailing. My enduring interests lie in biosciences, venture capital, risk analysis, and collaborating with passionate, talented people.
A few maxims guide me: “If you can’t get the small things right, you’ll never get the big things right.”
“Give no excuse, take no excuse.”
“You can’t do a good deal with a bad person.”
“You make your profit when you buy.”
I’m fortunate to work in a field where a measure of knowledge and common sense go a long way. Achieving “guru status” seems deceptively simple—but the real reward lies in continual learning.
From time to time, I’ll share opinions, reviews, and reflections on biotechnology and venture capital—along with a few ideas I find worth revisiting. I hope you enjoy the read.
